DHCP and trunk support

1.28.1 (2025-06-22)

Network Updates with DHCP and Trunk Support!

This release adds DHCP support and trunk capabilities to help you manage network configurations more effectively!

DHCP Support

You can now set DHCP as an option for IP-enabled gear and ports. When doing so:
  • IP address and subnet fields are automatically disabled when DHCP is enabled
  • Previous static IP and subnet values are cleared
  • Reports and tables will show 'DHCP' instead of a static addresses
  • DHCP gear and ports are not considered during IP address duplication checks
You can enable DHCP for ports in the gear's port table by clicking on the IP address cell and for supported gear, you can enable DHCP from General Settings after selecting the gear. In Reports, there is a new DHCP column for both Gear and Port Reports that allow you to toggle this new setting as well.

Gear that supports IP Address and DHCP at the gear level include switches, PTZ cameras, lighting distributions, and audio equipment. All network connector ports on all gear types support IP Address and DHCP at the port level, except for switches.

Trunk Support

A popular request has been native trunk support, without having to use workarounds or manual labeling of VLANs. In the VLAN Manager, you can mark a VLAN as a trunk by clicking the ID and selecting the Trunk checkbox.

When changing a VLAN to a trunk, the app will:
  • Clear the previous VLAN ID value
  • Rename the VLAN to 'Trunk'
  • Display 'Trunk' in the table and in Reports
You can only have one trunk VLAN at a time, as it carries all other VLANs. Trying to enable a second trunk will prompt you to remove the previous trunk first.

We have also enabled VLAN ID validation limiting the range that VLAN IDs are allowed to be set to be within 1-4094 to be more accurate. Any existing projects using an ID outside of this range will have their ID updated to the next available ID when they open their project next.

Report Mode Updates

To go along with the networking updates, we have added additional information to Reports:
  • New Columns
    • VLAN: Connection Reports now display source and target VLAN information
    • DHCP: DHCP labels replace IP addresses when DHCP is enabled, along with dedicated DHCP columns to change their status
    • IP Address and Subnet: New dedicated columns for IP addresses and subnets have been added to the Gear report, usable on switches
  • General Features
    • Networking columns have been hidden by default to reduce the number of starting columns
    • We have increased the height of the Column Chooser to size to the number of options, so you no longer have to scroll to see all the columns on larger screens
    • Port labels now sort numerically first, then alphabetically to keep numbers in proper order (1, 2, 11, 20, 100 for example)

Improvements

  • New port options:
    • USB signal type - In addition when setting a USB style connector, this is automatically selected for you in the Library Editor
    • Video Loop category
  • Generic Gear now supports Expansion Cards
  • You can now revert to the most recent Version History if there has been changes to the project since it was saved
  • When changing between Local Mode options, the project is now saved before prompting you to reload the app

1.27.1 (2025-06-10)

Improvements

  • Improvements to how speed is handled in the Library Editor and the Gear Port Table
    • Speed will now update as you change your signal and connector types to ensure your speed still makes logical sense - for example changing from SDI to HDMI will clear the 3G-SDI speed and reset it to NA
    • Speed will automatically be set if possible when changing to a speed compatible port in the Gear Port Table - for example changing to an RJ45 will attempt to set the speed automatically if available on the library item
    • When using Multi Mode, speed will now only see options that are compatible with your connector and signal type - for example you can no longer set 10 Gbps on an XLR cable by default
    • You still have the flexibility to override all of these new improvements in your projects by using Full Edit Mode; these changes only apply to the default mode to streamline your selection
  • Added HD-BNC and PCIe as new connectors

Add your cable inventory to GearConnect!

1.27.0 (2025-06-05)

Prepare Cable Lists with the Cable Inventory!

Our latest feature - Cable Inventory – is here! Cables allow you to extend your project with additional information by assigning cables to your connections in the project. You can now maintain a comprehensive record of your cable inventory, detailing length, unit, connector, SKU, and quantity.

By adding cables to your connections, it enables tracking of usage at the per cable level, along with tracking your inventory counts. You will receive warnings when you start to run low, and a final warning when you run out of stock.

While you can manually assign cables to your connections in the drawing or in bulk from Report tab, the fastest way to assign cables is by choosing which cable is your default for new connections. For example, by selecting your 10’ RJ45 cable as your default RJ45 cable, then every new RJ45 connection you draw will automatically be assigned to your 10’ cable, until you run out of stock.

You can set one default cable per connector, so configure your most used cables at the start of the project to speed up your workflow!

The Cable Inventory Manager, accessible via the Tools menu or with the shortcut Ctrl+I, provides an interface for adding, editing, deleting, copying, and pasting cables. From the Manager, you can choose to generate a detailed "Cable Count Report". This will create and prepare a report for you, taking advantage of the full power of the Report mode!

An Upgraded Report Mode

Alongside the Cable Inventory, we've introduced several significant improvements to Report mode, bringing a smoother, more powerful experience, while squashing several bugs. From new column options to added animations, there is a lot to talk about, so let’s start with the highlights.

One of the standout additions is the new "Group By" feature, which allows you to group data in their reports by several common fields. Some examples include grouping all your ports by connector type or creating a gear report grouped by device models. This feature is easily accessible through the new dropdown located in the report toolbar, making it trivial to start building helpful reports.

Another useful tool is the "Hide/Show Duplicate Rows" button. This new feature enables the ability to toggle between displaying all rows or only unique rows based on the currently visible columns. It is especially handy for making reports like pack lists using either the new “Cables Used” or “Total (Connector)” columns.

To make it easier to access, we have moved and enhanced the column selection feature to the "Choose Columns" button in the toolbar. You can now manage which columns are visible in their reports with ease, offering enhanced flexibility and customization. You can even drag the columns around to change their order in this menu as well!

And lastly, the app now can generate template reports for you, to quickly jump you right into the information you need. You may have noticed that already with the “Cable Count Report”!

Other templates are available when you right-click on gear in the drawing, you will see two new options: Port Report and Connection Report. These will generate new reports for you, automatically filtered to either the gear’s ports or connections. This allows you to quickly bulk edit parts of your gear, double check your data, or further customize the report to your liking.

Together with the Cable Inventory, these additions make Report mode an even more powerful tool to customize and view project data. And with CSV and Excel exports, it’s easy to export everything out of GearConnect into other tools such as inventory software.

But these additions are just the tip of the iceberg! We have lots of other big improvements to help speed up and improve your workflow!
